Philippine Congressman Robert Ace Barbers has urged for an additional US military site to combat foreign threats following the recovery of a submarine drone believed to be from China.
Barbers emphasized the importance of a naval base in protecting the rich deuterium deposits in the eastern seaboard, noting potential foreign intelligence operations.
The drone, identified as HY-119, was retrieved off the province of Masbate and is suspected of having been utilized for satellite communications.
Defense analysts support the proposal, arguing that a new military base could help monitor vital waters and enhance the Philippines' strategic position in the region.
However, the proposal has faced backlash, with critics warning that US military presence could undermine the country's sovereignty and escalate regional tensions.
