Chinese swimming sensation Yu Zidi continued to dazzle at the Asian Games, winning her second gold medal in as many days with a record-breaking performance in the women’s 200m individual medley. She clocked in at 2 minutes, 6.10 seconds, shattering the previous Games record and only coming within 0.40 seconds of the world record held by Canada’s Summer McIntosh, according to Channel News Asia, India Times, and Reuters.
In her previous event, Yu claimed gold in the 200m butterfly, where she completed the race in just 2:05.08, breaking a Games record that had stood for years. Her performance not only showcased her dominance in the pool, but also the promising future she holds in the sport, having finished a remarkable 3.36 seconds ahead of silver medalist Chang Mohan, according to South China Morning Post and India Times.
Yu, who started swimming at the tender age of six, expressed her ongoing desire for improvement, stating, “It was only so-so,” and emphasized that she believed she could swim faster. She highlighted areas of her technique needing refinement and aims to enhance her performance in future competitions, according to Reuters and India Times.
This remarkable young athlete's achievements have drawn comparisons to that of other elite swimmers, particularly with Summer McIntosh, who made waves in the sport at a similarly young age. Yu’s success at the Asian Games positions her as a formidable contender for future events, including the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where she will still be just 15 years old, according to India Times, Reuters, and Channel News Asia.
