  • Google to invest €13 billion in AI infrastructure and nuclear power in Finland.
  • The investment includes new data centers and energy projects.
  • Google signed a 22-year deal for electricity from Fortum's nuclear plant.
  • Finland's Prime Minister emphasized the importance of the investment.
  • The project is expected to support 37,000 jobs during construction.

Google announced a record investment of at least €13 billion ($15 billion) to develop artificial intelligence infrastructure in Finland over the next two years. Chief among the initiatives is the construction of three new data centers and the expansion of an existing facility in Hamina. This investment marks Google's largest single financial commitment in Europe and demonstrates Finland's capabilities in responsibly developing AI infrastructure, according to Le Monde and Reuters.

A significant feature of this investment is a 22-year power purchase agreement with Fortum, which allows Google to buy up to 50% of the output from the Loviisa nuclear power plant. This deal is essential for Google in ensuring a stable, low-carbon energy supply necessary for its AI operations, as it seeks to align with climate goals amid rising energy costs. "This is Google's first nuclear energy deal outside of the United States," stated Ruth Porat, Chief Investment Officer of Google, highlighting the importance of this agreement, according to Reuters and BBC.

The investment is expected to generate substantial economic benefits for Finland, boosting the country's GDP by approximately €3.6 billion annually during the construction phase from 2027 to 2028. Moreover, the project is projected to create over 37,000 jobs, including 16,000 in construction alone. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo emphasized that this investment extends beyond mere economic figures and highlights Finland's strengths in innovation and research development, as cited in Le Monde, Reuters, and BBC.

Furthermore, Google's investments in Finland will support local communities through various initiatives, including biodiversity and educational programs. The company aims to integrate new energy capacity alongside enhancing existing energy grids to ensure affordability as demand for AI services continues to rise. This strategic move is part of a broader ambition, with Alphabet targeting a global investment range of $195 billion to $205 billion, aligning its resources with the booming demand for digital infrastructure, according to Reuters and BBC.
