A ferry carrying around 270 people capsized off the coast of northern Cyprus, prompting immediate search and rescue operations. The privately owned vessel, which departed from the port of Kyrenia, started taking in water shortly after leaving at 12:30 PM local time, as reported by Turkish Cypriot media. The ferry was heading towards the Turkish port of Tasucu when the incident occurred, according to Al Jazeera, Reuters, CBS News, and Channel News Asia.

Transport Minister Erhan Arikli confirmed that one passenger had died and that there were 267 people on board, comprising 259 passengers and eight crew members. As rescue operations unfolded, many survivors were taken to Kyrenia port for medical attention, with reports indicating that 159 passengers had already been reached, as noted by Reuters and CBS News.

Video footage showed individuals in life jackets on the capsized ferry, highlighting the chaos of the rescue efforts.
