North Korea's defence minister, No Kwang Chol, has been dismissed from his position as part of a significant reshuffle of the country's military leadership. This decision was reported by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) and was approved during a meeting led by Kim Jong Un on Saturday. In addition to his dismissal, No was demoted to the role of "first vice-director of the Munitions Industry Department," while Kim Song Gi, the director of the General Political Bureau of the Korean People's Army, has been appointed as the new defence minister, according to Channel News Asia, South China Morning Post, and India Times.

Alongside these changes, Pak Jong Chon, a senior defence adviser, has been promoted to vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and named to the ruling party's Political Bureau. This leadership shake-up follows the conclusion of joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States, which North Korea routinely denounces as preparations for invasion.
