Renowned climber Nirmal Purja and nine others were confirmed dead following a devastating avalanche that struck during their expedition on Broad Peak in Pakistan. The Alpine Club of Pakistan reported that the body of Purja was recovered after contact was lost with the climbing team on Thursday due to the avalanche, which occurred around 5,700 meters altitude. This tragic event has produced a significant outpouring of grief in the mountaineering community, particularly in Nepal, where Purja was regarded as a national hero according to Channel News Asia and India Times.

Rescue operations were hampered by harsh weather conditions, which grounded helicopters and complicated the retrieval process. Local military and rescue teams managed to recover Purja's body along with three other climbers, although three individuals remain missing, including a Pakistani guide whose expedition was reportedly his last. Purja's expedition company, Elite Exped, stated, "The world has lost one of mountaineering's greatest climbers," highlighting the profound impact of his achievements on the sport according to India Times, Le Monde, and Al Jazeera.

Purja, who gained fame for climbing all 14 of the world's highest peaks within a record 189 days, was leading an international team that also included climbers from Nepal, the United States, Oman, and China. As described by sources, the avalanche struck midday on Thursday, entombing the group amid some of the world’s toughest climbing conditions. The resilience and character of the climbers involved only adds to the tragedy of their loss, as echoed by emotional tributes from community leaders and officials, including Prince William, who expressed his sorrow on social media according to India Times and Al Jazeera.
