  • China's favorability has surpassed that of the US in 25 out of 36 surveyed countries.
  • Xi Jinping is viewed more favorably than Donald Trump in 22 countries.
  • Canada and major European nations report significant shifts in opinion against the US.
  • Favorable views of the US have declined while confidence in both leaders remains low.
  • Only six countries still favor the US more than China, notably Israel and Japan.

A recent survey by the Pew Research Center indicates a significant shift in global public opinion, showing that more people in numerous countries now have favorable views of China over the United States. This study, conducted with over 42,000 participants across 36 countries from February to May, reveals that, for the first time since Pew began tracking these sentiments 20 years ago, China is favored in 25 of the surveyed nations. These findings highlight a remarkable change, particularly in relationships between the US and its allies, coinciding with the tensions fueled by the Trump administration's foreign policies and military engagements, including the US-led war against Iran, according to BBC, Los Angeles Times, and NPR.

The survey illustrates that views of Chinese leader Xi Jinping are more favorable than those of US President Donald Trump in 22 nations, including key allies like Canada, Germany, and the UK. Low confidence in both leaders was a common theme across many of the countries surveyed. Notably, the erosion of favorable opinions towards the US is apparent in Canada, where positive views have dropped from 57% to 33% over the past three years, accompanied by a rise in favorability towards China from 14% to 44%, as reported by BBC, Los Angeles Times, and NPR.

This significant shift in global opinion appears to be driven by the perception that the US has not effectively contributed to peace and stability, particularly highlighted by its engagements in conflicts like the Israeli-Hamas war and its treatment of allied relations. The US is still regarded as more supportive of personal freedoms, though that advantage is diminishing, with a growing number of respondents worldwide indicating the US government fails to respect its citizens' freedoms, according to BBC, Los Angeles Times, and NPR.

Moreover, the survey findings identify a trend where opinions have notably shifted in several European countries, signaling a broader geopolitical transformation. Countries such as France, Spain, and Italy now show more favorable sentiments towards China as compared to the US, which further emphasizes a changing landscape in international relations. Six countries—Israel, Japan, India, South Korea, the Philippines, and Poland—still express a more favorable view of the US, yet even their perceptions are trending downward, as highlighted by BBC, Los Angeles Times, and NPR.
