At least 15 Indian tourists lost their lives when a speedboat capsized off Vietnam's southern island of Phu Quoc on Saturday, July 11. The vessel was carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members when it overturned approximately 400 metres from Hon May Rut Island, during rough sea conditions. Local authorities confirmed that 21 people were rescued, with search and rescue operations continuing into the evening, according to Channel News Asia, Al Jazeera, and BBC.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the speedboat capsized while returning from Hon May Rut Island to An Thoi Port around 1 PM, as heavy winds and high waves struck the area, complicating rescue efforts. Authorities stated that several passengers were trapped inside the vessel, making immediate rescues difficult, according to reports from India Times and India Times.
The Indian embassy in Vietnam has initiated emergency response efforts, establishing control rooms in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to assist the families of the victims. They described the incident as "tragic" and emphasized that exact details of the accident are still being determined, as per Channel News Asia and Al Jazeera.
