On Sunday morning, a gang of masked thieves executed a daring burglary at the museum of French luxury glassmaker Lalique, located in Wingen-sur-Moder, northeastern France. The robbery took place at around 5:30 am local time, where the thieves forced entry and targeted the jewellery room, stealing about 20 pieces valued at approximately €4 million. The investigation is currently assessing the total financial loss, according to SCMP, India Times, and Le Monde.
The police were alerted only after a cleaning lady arrived at the scene, despite alarms having sounded during the break-in. The mayor of Wingen-sur-Moder, Christian Dorschner, expressed his anger over the incident, highlighting a significant failure in the security response and stating, "They didn’t inform the gendarmes." He suggested that the thieves were likely experts familiar with the museum's security systems, according to SCMP, India Times, and Le Monde.
This recent theft comes months after a significant robbery at the Louvre, where over €80 million worth of jewellery was stolen, putting the security of famous French museums under scrutiny. The Lalique museum, dedicated to the works of jeweller and glassmaker René Lalique, houses over 650 exceptional pieces and is considered a sensitive site regarding security, according to SCMP, India Times, and Le Monde.
