Canada will officially join the Eurovision Song Contest in 2027, with the event to be hosted in Bulgaria, marking a significant occasion as it becomes the first new country to join the competition since Australia joined in 2015. "While born in Europe, the contest continues to welcome the world," said Eurovision director Martin Green, highlighting the event’s expanding international reach, according to Bangkok Post, BBC, and Reuters.
This decision follows CBC/Radio-Canada's recent upgrade to full membership in the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which oversees the contest. CBC/Radio-Canada will later announce how Canada’s entry will be selected, according to Reuters and BBC.
Following the recent controversy over Israel's participation, which led some countries to withdraw from the competition, Eurovision organizers are eager to see a diverse range of countries participate. Canada’s participation is seen as a positive development, allowing Canadian talent to be showcased at one of the world’s biggest music events, a sentiment echoed by CBC/Radio-Canada president Marie-Philippe Bouchard, according to Bangkok Post and Reuters.
