A tragic incident in Lahore saw at least 14 schoolchildren killed when the roof of a tutoring centre collapsed on Tuesday. The victims, aged between four and 12, were attending classes in the under-construction building when the caving roof trapped many beneath the debris, leaving at least eight others injured, including a teacher, according to SCMP and IndiaTimes.
Rescue operations were conducted rapidly, and while the roof collapse was attributed to poor construction standards, concerns were raised about the building's overall integrity. "It collapsed suddenly while workers were repairing tiles," noted a witness, highlighting the hazardous conditions of the site, as reported by BBC and Al Jazeera.
Authorities have initiated an investigation, with police confirming the arrest of the tutoring centre's owner and another individual as part of their inquiry into the incident. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed sorrow over the loss, emphasizing the need for accountability and proper medical assistance for the injured, which was echoed by officials throughout Punjab, according to Channel News Asia and Al Jazeera.
