China Expands Export Controls to Include 20 Japanese Entities Amid Rising Tensions

  • China adds 20 Japanese entities to its export control list, restricting dual-use items.
  • The move responds to Japan's heightened military ambitions and recent political statements.
  • China asserts its actions are legitimate and tied to national security concerns.

On Monday, China announced the addition of 20 Japanese entities to its export control list, responding to what it describes as Japan's increasing militarization. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated that the list includes organizations such as the National Institute for Defense Studies and various subsidiaries involved in Japan's defense sector. These controls prevent Chinese companies from exporting dual-use items without advance approval, emphasizing Beijing's intent to safeguard national security and adhere to non-proliferation commitments, according to Indiatimes and Channel News Asia.

China's commerce ministry characterized its latest measures as a response to Japan's alleged "new militarism," especially comments made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding potential military intervention in Taiwan. The statement highlighted that Japan’s actions towards military enhancement justified China's export restrictions, according to Reuters and Al Jazeera.

The Chinese government contends that its actions are reasonable and legal, asserting that they do not obstruct normal economic exchanges between the two nations. Despite this, Japanese officials have labeled the restrictions as "unacceptable," with Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara expressing dismay and calling for their withdrawal, which he described as "absolutely regrettable," according to Reuters and Channel News Asia.

This move represents a continuation of Beijing's broadened restrictions, which have increasingly targeted both Japanese and American entities amid escalating tensions over military technology and strategic supply chains. China's ministry underscored that the restrictions were necessary as Japan's military ambitions continued to intensify, reflecting a deterioration in relations fuelled by ongoing historical and territorial disputes, as noted by Al Jazeera and Indiatimes.
