  • An Australian man, Simon Peter Carman, has been arrested in connection with the murder of a 17-year-old Thai girl.
  • CCTV footage shows the suspect entering a hotel with the victim and leaving alone with a suitcase.
  • The victim’s family is devastated and is calling for the harshest punishment for the suspect.

In Thailand, the arrest of an Australian man has sent shockwaves through both Thailand and Australia, following the discovery of the body of a 17-year-old girl, Tunchanok Donhomla, found stuffed inside a suitcase. The suspect, Simon Peter Carman, aged 45, was apprehended at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport just as he was preparing to leave the country, after police traced his movements using surveillance footage, which allegedly showed him entering a hotel with the girl and exiting hours later with a large suitcase, according to Indiatimes.

Carman faces several serious charges, including murder, concealment of a body, and taking a minor for sexual purposes, as confirmed by the Thai police who have been investigating the case closely. The victim’s father, Thongchai Donhomla, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, revealing that his daughter was independent and always found ways to help him despite her young age. He described being “deeply saddened” by her death, according to Reuters and Channel News Asia.

The girl's stepmother, Oradee Bussarakum, called for the harshest penalties against Carman, declaring that she wanted him executed. In a statement provided in the police investigation room, Carman expressed regret to the victim’s family, claiming, “It was out of my control,” but the details of his exact defense remain under investigation, as reported by South China Morning Post.

As the investigation continues, Thai authorities are working diligently to gather evidence, including the implications of CCTV footage that depicted Carman loading the suitcase onto a motorcycle and leaving for a location near a railway line where the body was ultimately discovered, according to Indiatimes and Reuters.
