Credited from: LATIMES

  • California Governor Gavin Newsom is under investigation by the Justice Department.
  • Newsom accuses Trump of using the DOJ against political opponents.
  • The governor claims the investigation is in retaliation for his presidential ambitions.
  • Federal agents are reportedly probing his family, friends, and former staff.
  • Newsom denies any wrongdoing and asserts he has nothing to hide.

California Governor Gavin Newsom recently alleged that he and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, are the subject of an investigation by the Justice Department, which he claims is politically motivated and orchestrated at the behest of former President Donald Trump. Newsom asserted that the inquiry is related to his speculated presidential ambitions for 2028, saying, "Today, my wife & I joined Donald Trump’s hit list" due to the federal scrutiny he faces, according to CBS News and Reuters.

In a video statement posted on social media, he claimed that federal agents have been "knocking on the doors of family, friends, and former employees," demanding records and "digging through years and years of random documents," but added, "Not because they found a crime. Because they are simply trying to find one," reports Los Angeles Times and Al Jazeera.

Newsom, a Democrat, voiced his concerns over the nature of the investigation, charge that it is part of a wider pattern of targeting Trump's political adversaries. He stated, "He isn’t coming after me because of mean tweets, but because I am considering running for President," highlighting the personal nature of the inquiry, according to South China Morning Post and BBC.

While the Justice Department has not confirmed any ongoing investigations that specifically involve Newsom or his wife, Newsom's office reiterated their commitment to transparency, underscoring that they "have nothing to hide," as detailed by India Times and Los Angeles Times.
