China's Shenzhou 23 spacecraft was launched on Sunday from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, carrying three astronauts, including Li Jiaying, who will be the first astronaut from Hong Kong. The mission is set to feature one astronaut remaining in space for a year, which is among the longest single stays in space recorded. The Long March 2-F rocket lifted off at 11:08 PM local time, propelling the spacecraft into orbit about 10 minutes later, as confirmed by the Chinese space agency (CMSA). The Shenzhou 23 mission will execute essential experiments to study human adaptability in space, according to Channel News Asia and NPR.

The crew consists of commander Zhu Yangzhu, pilot Zhang Zhiyuan, and payload specialist Li Jiaying. Li, a former Hong Kong police officer with a doctoral degree in computer forensics, expressed her excitement, stating, "This is a rare chance. Why not try?". The astronauts are expected to conduct numerous scientific projects during their stay at the Tiangong space station, which has hosted crews since its initial manning in 2021, according to BBC and NPR.
