  • Russian missile strike on Kyiv kills 24, including three children.
  • President Zelenskyy calls for punishment of Russia and vows retaliation.
  • Emergency services worked tirelessly for over 28 hours to search for victims.
  • The strike is part of Russia's largest aerial assault since the invasion began.
  • Ukraine launches drone attacks targeting Russian military infrastructure.

A missile strike by Russia on a nine-story apartment building in Kyiv resulted in the deaths of 24 people, including three children, marking one of the deadliest attacks since the beginning of the war in Ukraine over four years ago. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed grief and outrage, stating, "A Russia like this can never be normalized - a Russia that deliberately destroys lives and hopes to remain unpunished" while highlighting the need for increased air defense support from allies, according to Reuters and LA Times.

The attack, which occurred during a week of intensified bombardment by Russian forces, has been termed as part of their largest aerial assault since the conflict erupted. Emergency responders worked without pause for over 28 hours to recover victims from the rubble of the apartment building, which was heavily damaged by what Zelenskyy identified as a recently manufactured Russian Kh-101 missile, according to Reuters and Al Jazeera.

Witnesses reported scenes of despair as mourners gathered to pay tribute to the victims, while Kyiv officials declared a day of mourning with flags flown at half-mast and all entertainment events canceled. The Interior Ministry noted that more than 48 individuals sustained injuries in the attack, underscoring the widespread impact on the community, as stated by LA Times and Al Jazeera.

In response to the ongoing threats, Zelenskyy indicated that he had conferred with military officials regarding long-range strikes targeting key Russian military assets. His administration also began retaliatory measures with drone strikes aimed at Russian infrastructure, which resulted in casualties, including children, in Ryazan, Russia. This marked a notable escalation in Ukraine's military efforts following the recent missile attacks, as noted in reports by Reuters, LA Times, and Al Jazeera.
