British pop star Dua Lipa has initiated a $15 million lawsuit against Samsung Electronics, accusing the tech giant of using her image without consent on its television packaging. The lawsuit, filed in the California federal court, claims Samsung used a copyrighted photograph titled “Dua Lipa - Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024", which Lipa owns, for promotional purposes (according to Reuters and Channel News Asia).
The lawsuit states that Samsung used this image on cardboard boxes of television sets, enabling the company to profit from a false implication that Lipa endorsed their products. Lipa reportedly first discovered this infringement in June 2025 and made demands for its cessation, which Samsung allegedly disregarded (according to BBC and Bangkok Post).
Lipa's claims extend to copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and misappropriation of her likeness, noting that the unauthorized use has diluted her brand identity. Legal documents include fan comments from social media, referring to the packaging as the "Dua Lipa TV Box" and claiming purchases were influenced by her image (according to Reuters, Channel News Asia, and BBC).
The singer's legal representatives argue that Samsung improperly capitalized on Lipa's success, undermining her control over how her image was used (according to Bangkok Post).
