A suicide attack on a police post in northwest Pakistan has led to the death of 14 police officers. The attack occurred in Bannu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where a vehicle loaded with explosives was detonated late Saturday. Following the explosion, armed gunmen attacked the remaining officers, resulting in a shootout that caused additional casualties as some officers later succumbed to injuries after the building collapsed. Police official Sajjad Khan detailed that rescuers used heavy machinery to retrieve bodies from the rubble, while three officers were wounded in the incident, according to Channel News Asia and South China Morning Post.
The militant alliance known as Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the attack, identifying itself as a splinter group from the Pakistani Taliban. The group asserted that it formed as a response to criticism and repression, which has led to an increase in violence in the region. President Asif Ali Zardari condemned the act as part of a broader pattern of violence that Islamabad attributes to militants operating from Afghanistan, a claim denied by the Afghan government, as detailed in India Times, Los Angeles Times, and BBC.
