A United Airlines Boeing 767, arriving from Venice, Italy, struck a light pole and damaged a delivery truck on the New Jersey Turnpike while landing at Newark Liberty International Airport on Sunday. The aircraft was carrying 221 passengers and 10 crew members, all of whom were unharmed, according to SCMP and NPR.
Upon landing, the plane's approach went directly over a busy section of the Turnpike, where it experienced contact with the light pole and the truck. The light pole subsequently hit a Jeep on the highway, as stated by the New Jersey State Police. The truck driver was hospitalized but has since been released with minor injuries Los Angeles Times and NPR.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the flight landed safely, although it struck a light pole during its approach. The National Transportation Safety Board has initiated an investigation into the incident and directed United Airlines to submit cockpit voice and flight data recorders for review SCMP, NPR, and Los Angeles Times.
