Authorities in Austria have arrested a 39-year-old man after rat poison was discovered in some jars of HiPP baby food. This investigation began after a customer reported suspicious tampering in a jar purchased from a supermarket in Eisenstadt on April 18, prompting a recall of affected products across Austria, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic, according to Al Jazeera, CBS News, and Los Angeles Times.
Following the discovery, HiPP expressed relief over the arrest, emphasizing that it had been a victim of a criminal act. An unspecified blackmail threat was made against the company, complicating the matter further. The recall involved jars specifically made for infants (5-month-olds), sold in various supermarket chains, including SPAR stores, according to CBS News and Los Angeles Times.
In total, five tampered jars were confiscated before they could be consumed, and authorities are currently awaiting an expert report on the toxicity of the poison found inside the food items. The police are treating this incident as a serious public safety concern, with investigations focusing on “intentional endangerment of the public," as reported by Al Jazeera and CBS News.
