President Donald Trump was evacuated from the White House Correspondents' Dinner following reports of gunfire around 8:30 p.m. ET. The president was unharmed, while a suspect was taken into custody by the United States Secret Service. Reports indicate that an individual attempted to breach security with a firearm but was intercepted before entering the ballroom, according to NPR and India Times.
During initial evacuation procedures, attendees, including high-ranking officials, were moved for their safety. Trump expressed his appreciation for the Secret Service's response and encouraged that the event continue once deemed safe. "Quite an evening in D.C. At the same time, a Secret Service agent was reportedly injured but survived due to wearing a bulletproof vest. The suspect had both a shotgun and a handgun on them, which were recovered at the scene, highlights CBS News. Trump confirmed that he would address the media and expressed intentions to reschedule the dinner within 30 days, depending on law enforcement's recommendations.
