  • Hisham Abugharbieh, 26, charged with two counts of premeditated murder.
  • Victims Zamil Limon and Nahida Bristy were doctoral students at USF.
  • Limon's remains were discovered, while Bristy is still missing.

A 26-year-old man named Hisham Abugharbieh has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of two University of South Florida (USF) doctoral students, Zamil Limon and Nahida Bristy, both originally from Bangladesh. Authorities from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office announced these charges following evidence presented that implicated Abugharbieh, who was the roommate of Limon. The charges were confirmed after the gruesome discovery of Limon's remains on the Howard Frankland Bridge, with the search for Bristy ongoing, according to CBS News, Los Angeles Times, South China Morning Post, and NPR.

Abugharbieh's initial court appearance took place in Tampa on Saturday, where he was ordered held without bond. This charge follows an investigation initiated after the couple went missing on April 16. Limon's remains had been reported found on Friday morning, while Bristy has yet to be located, leading authorities to suspect foul play. Hillsborough County Chief Deputy Joseph Maurer confirmed that Abugharbieh also faces additional charges, including tampering with evidence and domestic violence, according to CBS News and NPR.

During the investigation, police responded to a domestic violence report at Abugharbieh’s family home, allowing relatives to escape before he barricaded himself inside. A SWAT team was deployed, utilizing drones and negotiators, before he surrendered. Both students, aged 27, were said to be contemplating marriage, creating a significant emotional impact on the campus community. Vice Chancellor Mohammad Ismail expressed the university's sorrow at Bristy's presumed loss, emphasizing the need for justice, based on reports from Los Angeles Times, South China Morning Post, and NPR.

Abugharbieh's background includes previous arrests related to domestic violence, suggesting a troubling history. He had been charged with battery and burglary offenses in 2023 but had completed a diversion program for first-time misdemeanants. His tumultuous past has raised public safety concerns as the search for Bristy continues. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information to come forward, in accordance with reports from Los Angeles Times, South China Morning Post, and NPR.
