  • Carlos Alcaraz will miss the French Open and Italian Open due to a wrist injury.
  • The decision comes after tests revealed complications in his right wrist.
  • Alcaraz aims for a strong recovery, prioritizing his long-term career over immediate play.
  • His absence opens opportunities for competitors like Jannik Sinner at Roland Garros.
  • Alcaraz holds a 22-3 record this season and is a two-time French Open champion.

Reigning two-time French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz announced on April 24 that he will not participate in this year's tournament as he recovers from a wrist injury. “We have decided that the most prudent thing to do is to be cautious and not participate in Rome or Roland Garros,” Alcaraz stated on social media, expressing determination to return stronger after this setback, according to Le Monde.

The injury was sustained during the first round of the Barcelona Open where Alcaraz achieved victory but had to withdraw from the tournament afterward. The 22-year-old had already announced his withdrawal from the Madrid Masters on April 17, which raised concerns regarding his participation at Roland Garros, according to Al Jazeera and South China Morning Post.

Reflecting on the situation, Alcaraz remarked, “I’d rather come back maybe a bit later, but in great shape, than come back quickly and risk making this injury worse.” This mindset emphasizes his dedication to a long-term career in tennis, as he aims to ensure a full recovery without future complications, according to Al Jazeera, South China Morning Post, and Le Monde.

Alcaraz's absence poses an opportunity for other players, particularly Jannik Sinner, who expressed disappointment over the news but acknowledged the importance of athlete well-being. “As a competitor, you want to play against the best players in the world, and he’s definitely the best player on this surface,” Sinner remarked after his match at the Madrid Open, as cited in South China Morning Post and Al Jazeera.
