Peruâs defense and foreign ministers resigned Wednesday after interim President JosĂ© MarĂa BalcĂĄzar announced he would defer a decision on a $3.5 billion deal to purchase 24 F-16 fighter jets from the United States. The ministers expressed concern that the postponement undermines Peruâs credibility in international negotiations, as Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela stated, âthe political decision made by Mr Balcazar endangers our countryâ according to South China Morning Post, Al Jazeera, and Los Angeles Times.
In a statement, Minister Carlos DĂaz highlighted that the contracts for the F-16s had already been signed and that delaying the purchase could compromise national security. He noted that officials from the Ministry of Defense had proceeded to sign the contracts despite BalcĂĄzar's reluctance, stating that it was necessary "for the security and defense of the nation," according to South China Morning Post and Los Angeles Times.
The decision to hand off the significant financial commitment to the incoming administration was labeled by BalcĂĄzar as necessary due to his transitional status as president. He stated, âFor us to commit such a large sum of money to the incoming government would be a poor practice for a transitional government,â reflecting the ongoing political instability in Peru as it anticipates elections amidst controversies over previous administrations, according to Al Jazeera and Los Angeles Times.
The U.S. Ambassador to Peru, Bernie Navarro, reacted to the decision, suggesting that any negotiations perceived as "bad faith" would have severe consequences for U.S.-Peruvian relations. He vehemently warned, âIf you deal with the U.S. in bad faith and undermine U.S. interests, I will use every available tool to protect and promote the prosperity and security of the United States,â reinforcing concerns about the ramifications of halted negotiations for the fighter jets, according to South China Morning Post and Al Jazeera.
