A life jacket worn by Laura Mabel Francatelli, a first-class passenger on the RMS Titanic, has been auctioned off for £670,000 (approximately $906,000). The flotation device, signed by Francatelli and other survivors, was the highlight of the auction conducted by Henry Aldridge & Son in Devizes, England. The jacket, made of canvas with cork-filled sections, significantly exceeded its presale estimate of £250,000 to £350,000, selling to an unidentified telephone bidder according to the Los Angeles Times, CBS News, BBC, and NPR.
This life jacket is particularly notable as it is the only known jacket from a Titanic survivor to be sold at auction in the 114 years since the ship sank. Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge expressed excitement over the item, noting that it reflects the ongoing passion for Titanic stories and memorabilia. Alongside the jacket, a seat cushion from one of the Titanic's lifeboats was sold for £390,000 (around $527,000), purchased by the owners of two Titanic museums in Tennessee and Missouri according to the Los Angeles Times, CBS News, and BBC.
