  • UK counterterrorism police are investigating an arson attack in Hendon, a predominantly Jewish area.
  • The attack is part of a recent surge in antisemitic incidents, including attacks on synagogues.
  • No injuries were reported, and police have not linked this incident to previous attacks.
  • The group Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiya claimed responsibility for similar incidents.
  • Authorities are increasing police presence in affected areas for community safety.

UK counterterrorism officers are investigating an arson attack on a building in Hendon, a neighborhood with a significant Jewish population, which occurred late Friday night. The Metropolitan Police reported that a man was seen placing a bag containing three bottles of "fluid" by the building before attempting to ignite them. Fortunately, no injuries resulted from the incident, but the shopfront sustained minor damage, according to Le Monde and SCMP.

This incident follows a troubling rise in antisemitic acts, including a separate arson attack on a synagogue in Finchley and a previous attack involving the destruction of Jewish community ambulances in Golders Green. Police have arrested two individuals linked to the Finchley incident, but authorities maintain that there is no direct connection between the arson in Hendon and these prior incidents. Helen Flanagan from the Met's counterterrorism unit noted, “At this stage last night’s arson is not being linked to other incidents...but counterterrorism officers are leading due to the similarities of each attack,” as reported by CBS News and Le Monde.

Further complicating the situation, a group known as Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiya (HAYI), which has claimed responsibility for various prior attacks in Europe, is suspected to be behind the recent violence. The Community Security Trust has documented a sharp increase in antisemitic incidents in the UK, recording a high of 3,700 incidents in 2025 alone. In light of the pressing threat, police have indicated that communities should expect increased law enforcement presence in the area for enhanced safety, according to SCMP, CBS News, and Le Monde.
