Air New Zealand is set to become the first airline to provide triple-tier bunk beds specifically for economy-class passengers, a service expected to launch in November. The Skynest sleep pods will allow travelers to book four-hour sleeping stints during long flights, such as the lengthy Auckland to New York route. This service aims to help passengers transition from sitting upright for 16 to 18 hours to enjoying a more restful journey at a cost of NZ$495 (approximately $291) in addition to their ticket price, according to CBS News, LA Times, and SCMP.

The airline's Skynest will consist of six curtained sleep pods arranged in a triple-bunk configuration, promoting close quarters among passengers. As part of the experience, Air New Zealand has established guidelines to ensure a pleasant environment, prohibiting activities such as snacking and sharing the beds. "That means solo snoozes only, please, no musical nests or tag-teaming," the airline advises on its website, which also emphasizes cleanliness by assuring passengers that the bedding will be fully refreshed between uses, according to CBS News, LA Times, and SCMP.

Each pod is about the length of a standard bed and requires passengers to change into specially designated socks to enter. Users must fasten their seatbelts over their blankets and avoid using strong perfumes. The gentle lighting will signal the end of their four-hour use, with the possibility of being awakened more directly by flight attendants if necessary. However, the airline does prepare for potential disturbances, advising that earplugs will be provided to mask any snoring, as "statistically, someone's going to do it," according to CBS News, LA Times, and SCMP.
