Authorities reported that former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax fatally shot his wife, Cerina Fairfax, before taking his own life in their Annandale home shortly after midnight. Both teenagers were at home during the incident and one of them placed the 911 call, assuming their mother had been stabbed, though police later discovered bullet casings near her body instead, according to CBS News.
Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis indicated that the shooting appears to have stemmed from a complicated domestic dispute related to the couple's divorce. Recently, Fairfax had been served with divorce papers, which may have acted as a trigger for the tragic events, according to India Times and Reuters.
Reports highlighted that the Fairfax couple had been living separately within the same home while the divorce was unfolding. Cerina Fairfax had installed security cameras in the house, and in January, Justin Fairfax had contacted police, alleging that his wife had assaulted him; however, the footage disproved this claim, as noted by Los Angeles Times and Al Jazeera.
This incident has sent shockwaves through the Virginia community, with officials expressing condolences and concern for the children affected by this tragedy. Senator Mark Warner remarked, “We are keeping Cerina and Justin Fairfax’s family — especially their two children — in our prayers as we all process this shocking and horrifying news,” according to CBS News and Reuters.
