A former U.S. Marine pilot, Daniel Duggan, 57, has lost his appeal against extradition from Australia to the United States, where he faces allegations of illegally training Chinese pilots. Duggan was arrested in October 2022 in New South Wales in response to a U.S. extradition request linked to his activities in South Africa between 2010 and 2012. He has consistently denied the accusations, arguing they are driven by political motives, according to BBC, Reuters, and CBS News.
The Federal Court of Australia upheld the extradition order originally approved by former Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus in December 2024. Judge James Stellios dismissed Duggan's appeal, stating that the decisions made by the Attorney-General did not involve any jurisdictional errors. Duggan faces serious charges, including conspiracy to violate U.S. arms export laws and additional criminal charges that could lead to significant prison time if found guilty, as reported by Reuters and CBS News.
Saffrine Duggan, his wife, expressed her disappointment outside the court, stating, "Make no mistake: we will not give up," indicating potential further legal action to challenge the extradition. She emphasized the family's prolonged suffering since his arrest, which occurred in a supermarket parking lot in New South Wales. The family has reportedly expended significant funds on legal fees, amounting to approximately half a million dollars, as highlighted by BBC, CBS News, and Reuters.
