Ghanaian footballer Dominic Frimpong was killed during an armed robbery on his club side Berekum Chelsea’s team bus as they returned from an away match in the Ghana Premier League. The incident took place on Sunday between Goaso and Bibiani while the team was heading home from the game against Samartex in Samreboi, according to Reuters and Al Jazeera.
The club reported that "masked men wielding guns and assault rifles started shooting at our bus as the driver tried to reverse," leading players and staff to flee for cover in nearby bushes. Tragically, the Ghanaian Football Association later confirmed that 20-year-old Frimpong lost his life in this horrific incident, a sentiment echoed by Africanews and CBS News.
The GFA expressed their profound shock, declaring that this incident represents a significant loss not only to Berekum Chelsea but to Ghanaian football as a whole, as Frimpong was noted for his promising talent. They also stated plans to enhance security measures for clubs traveling for domestic competitions, a call for action that follows similar incidents, including an attack on Legon Cities' team bus in 2023, according to Reuters and Africanews.
