President Emmanuel Macron welcomed Cécile Kohler, 41, and Jacques Paris, 72, back to Paris after their release from almost four years of detention in Iran on espionage charges. Macron hailed their return as “the end of a terrible ordeal,” which began when they were arrested in May 2022 while on what was described as a tourism trip. After more than three years in prison, they were held under house arrest at the French embassy in Tehran since November 2023 until their release this week, amidst rising tensions in the region, according to SCMP, LA Times, and Africanews.
The pair left Iran via a diplomatic convoy, facing a long journey to safety that involved travel through Azerbaijan. Reports indicate that their release was facilitated by diplomatic negotiations, notably with Oman's mediation, amid recent escalations in the region linked to conflicts involving the United States. Macron’s office acknowledged the “long-term effort” to secure their freedom but emphasized that the urgency of their situation increased significantly due to the unfolding crisis, according to SCMP and LA Times.
Upon arrival, both Kohler and Paris expressed their relief and happiness, with Paris stating, “For us, this is a fresh start. We’re not broken,” reflecting their psychological resilience during the ordeal. They described their time in Tehran’s Evin prison as full of “daily horror” and constant threats to their safety. Kohler specifically reiterated, “we kept our hopes up right to the end,” highlighting their mental fortitude throughout the prolonged detainment, according to SCMP and Africanews.
Amidst their release, discussions of a potential prisoner swap involving Iranian national Mahdieh Esfandiari arose. Tehran had reportedly sought Esfandiari's return as part of negotiations; however, this was denied by Macron's office, emphasizing that their release was not contingent on any such agreement. Esfandiari had been sentenced in France for terrorism-related charges. Her house arrest was lifted shortly after the French nationals’ departure, according to LA Times and Africanews.
