A Japanese national detained in Iran since January has been released on bail, according to Japan's government. The individual is believed to be Shinnosuke Kawashima, the Tehran bureau chief for the public broadcaster NHK. Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara confirmed the release occurred on April 6, stating that the ambassador in Iran met the individual after their release and confirmed they were in good health, although no further details were provided regarding identity or charges, according to Reuters and Channel News Asia.
The detainee was first arrested on January 20 amid escalating tensions due to protests in Iran. NHK reported that the bureau chief was transferred to a prison known for holding political detainees, although later reports indicated that they appeared to suffer no health issues following their release. Kihara noted that Japan's embassy was in contact with the detained individual’s family and Iranian authorities throughout the process, highlighting ongoing diplomatic engagement, according to South China Morning Post and Al Jazeera.
