British prosecutors have charged three men in connection with an arson attack on Jewish charity ambulances in north London. The attack, which targeted four ambulances owned by the Hatzola community organization, was described by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer as a âdeeply shocking antisemitic arson attack.â The incident occurred on March 23 in Golders Green, where the ambulances were set ablaze in the early hours, resulting in significant property damage but no reported injuries, according to Reuters and BBC.
The suspects include two British men, Hamza Iqbal, 20, and Rehan Khan, 19, along with a 17-year-old boy who holds dual British-Pakistani nationality. They have all been charged with arson with intent to damage property and recklessness regarding endangerment to life. The court proceedings indicate that there is strong evidence suggesting this was a "premeditated and targeted attack against the Jewish community," as reported by CBS News and Al Jazeera.
Police have heightened security in Jewish community areas following the attack and have stated that while counter-terrorism officers are leading the investigation, the incident has not been officially classified as terrorism. Investigators are also looking into claims of responsibility by a group potentially linked to Iran, yet the situation is being treated as an antisemitic hate crime, as noted by BBC and CBS News.
In total, four individuals have reportedly been connected to this incident, with the most recent arrest made at Westminster Magistrates' Court on the date the three primary suspects were remanded in custody. They are expected to appear again at Londonâs Central Criminal Court, known as the Old Bailey, on April 24, according to multiple reports including Al Jazeera and Reuters.
