Credited from: CBSNEWS

  • Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the immediate retirement of Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George.
  • This move reflects ongoing efforts to align military leadership with President Trump's visions.
  • The Pentagon reports that more than a dozen senior military officers have been dismissed under Hegseth's leadership.
  • Gen. George has served the U.S. military since 1988, including service in Iraq and Afghanistan.
  • Christopher LaNeve is set to replace George as acting Army Chief of Staff.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has asked Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George to step down and take immediate retirement, as reported by multiple sources including CBS News and Al Jazeera. Hegseth aims for leadership that aligns with the vision he shares with President Trump. This decision is part of a broader restructuring that has seen over a dozen senior military leaders removed since Hegseth took office.

The Pentagon officially confirmed that George will retire "effective immediately," according to AA and BBC. Sean Parnell, Chief Pentagon spokesperson, remarked, "We are grateful for his service, but it was time for a leadership change in the Army". George, who assumed his role in September 2023, previously served as vice chief of staff and adviser to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.

Hegseth's decision emerges amidst escalating military engagement in Iran. His administration is focused on restructuring military leadership in direct support of wartime strategies, as noted by Reuters and India Times. George's removal refers to his capability to deliver on this vision and has been characterized as independent from recent military disciplinary actions.

Following George's retirement, Gen. Christopher LaNeve, the current vice chief of staff, is expected to step in as the acting Army Chief of Staff, praised as a "battle-tested leader" by Parnell, according to South China Morning Post and India Times. LaNeve will carry out the vision set forth by the current administration amid ongoing tensions in the region.
