French authorities have launched an investigation into a suspected link to Iran following a foiled bomb attack outside a Bank of America building in Paris over the weekend. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated that the investigation was prompted by the resemblance of this incident to other recent attacks in Europe attributed to a pro-Iran group, which claimed responsibility for those actions as well, according to Le Monde, Los Angeles Times, and South China Morning Post.
During the incident on Saturday morning, Paris police noticed two suspects carrying a shopping bag close to the Bank of America in the 8th arrondissement. Subsequently, law enforcement apprehended five suspects, including two on Monday, leading to the opening of an investigation by the national anti-terrorism prosecutor into alleged terrorism-related offenses, according to Le Monde and Los Angeles Times.
The French authorities have established a "direct link" to Iran, stating that the operational methods used in this case closely resemble those previously observed in the Netherlands and Belgium. Nuñez noted these links stem from claims made by a group known on Telegram as Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, which translates to the Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Right, according to Le Monde, Los Angeles Times, and South China Morning Post.
In light of the heightened threat, security measures have been intensified around key locations and individuals, particularly following an escalation of actions and rhetoric against Iran since the United States and Israel intensified their military operations against the country starting February 28. Nuñez emphasized that this includes the provision of personal protection for some Iranian opposition figures, according to Le Monde, Los Angeles Times, and South China Morning Post.
