  • Three UN peacekeepers killed in southern Lebanon in separate incidents.
  • Two Indonesian peacekeepers were killed by an explosion during a logistics convoy.
  • Escalating violence follows Israel's expanded military operations against Hezbollah.
  • UN calls for a transparent investigation into these deadly attacks on peacekeepers.
  • Over 1,200 people have reportedly died in ongoing conflict in Lebanon since early March.

Two more United Nations peacekeepers were killed in southern Lebanon, bringing the total number of fatalities among UN forces to three this week. The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported that two Indonesian peacekeepers died on Monday when “an explosion of unknown origin destroyed their vehicle” near the village of Bani Hayyan, injuring two others. This follows another incident on Sunday where a peacekeeper, also Indonesian, was killed when a projectile exploded near a UNIFIL position in Adchit Al Qusayr, according to Al Jazeera, BBC, and Channel News Asia.

The third deadly incident occurred amid an increase in violence between Israel and the militant group Hezbollah, which has intensified its attacks following Israel's recent military actions. More than 1,200 individuals have reportedly died in these ongoing clashes since early March, heightening concerns regarding civilian and military safety in the conflict-affected region, as highlighted by Al Jazeera and BBC.

UNIFIL expressed its condolences to the families of the deceased peacekeepers and emphasized the grave violations of international humanitarian law involved in targeting peacekeeping missions. The UN peacekeeping chief, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, condemned the attacks, stating that "peacekeepers must never be a target," a sentiment echoed by various international leaders as the situation in Lebanon continues to deteriorate, according to Channel News Asia and BBC.

In response to these attacks, Indonesia's Foreign Ministry demanded a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incidents and reiterated its condemnation of Israel's military operations in southern Lebanon. The calls for accountability are rooted in concerns that the ongoing hostilities jeopardize the safety of international personnel and exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in the region, as noted by Al Jazeera and Channel News Asia.

The conflict has not only led to military casualties but also a severe humanitarian impact, with more than 1.2 million people displaced across Lebanon. The violence has drawn widespread international condemnation, with calls from various leaders urging for respect for humanitarian law and protection for peacekeeping forces, according to BBC and Channel News Asia.
