Australian police shot dead a fugitive gunman, Dezi Freeman, who was wanted for the alleged murder of two police officers during a raid on his property in Victoria state last August. This incident marked the end of a seven-month manhunt for Freeman, categorized as one of Australia’s most-wanted criminals, according to BBC, Channel News Asia, and Reuters.
Freeman, also known as Desmond Filby, had been evading authorities since allegedly opening fire on police officers when they executed a search warrant at his rural property in Porepunkah. He killed Detective Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart, and injured a third officer, reports South China Morning Post, BBC, and Reuters.
During the extensive operation that involved over 450 police officers, a reward of A$1 million was offered for information leading to Freeman's capture, showcasing the urgency and resources devoted to the manhunt. He was described as possessing expert bushcraft skills and was considered armed and dangerous, according to Channel News Asia and South China Morning Post.
Freeman's beliefs aligned with the "sovereign citizen" movement, which denies the legitimacy of government laws. After his death, the Police Association of Victoria described him as a "coward" and emphasized the bravery of the officers involved in the operation, according to South China Morning Post and Channel News Asia.
