A fire at a car parts factory in the South Korean city of Daejeon has injured at least 55 people, with confirmed fatalities rising to 10 according to reports. The fire broke out on Friday around 1:00 PM local time, and authorities indicated a number of people may still be trapped inside the facility. President Lee Jae Myung has ordered the mobilization of all available resources to assist in rescue efforts, according to Reuters, Channel News Asia, and SCMP.
The National Fire Agency reported that the blaze resulted in 24 serious injuries, and concerns remain over the safety of at least 14 workers believed to be missing. Fire officials cited difficulties in accessing the site, particularly due to the risk of building collapse and the presence of hazardous materials, including 200 kg of sodium, which poses an explosion risk, according to India Times and SCMP.
Eyewitness accounts suggest the fire spread rapidly, possibly due to an explosion, prompting some workers to jump to escape. Efforts are currently focused on preventing the blaze from spreading to adjacent buildings while searching for the missing individuals, according to Reuters and Channel News Asia.
