Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro, 70, has been hospitalized in an intensive care unit due to pneumonia diagnosed as bronchopneumonia. He was admitted to DF Star Hospital in Brasilia after experiencing severe symptoms including high fever, chills, and low oxygen levels, with doctors advising that his medical condition is serious. Dr. Brasil Caiado noted that pneumonia in patients over 70 carries significant risks due to potential progression to septicemia, underlining the gravity of Bolsonaro's state, according to NPR.
While his pneumonia has stabilized, Bolsonaro's health has further complicated with worsening kidney function reports. As a part of his ongoing treatment, he is receiving IV antibiotics, hydration, and physiotherapy, which emphasizes the need for continued hospitalization, reported Reuters and India Times.
Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence for his involvement in a coup attempt following his election loss in 2022. Despite his incarceration, his family has repeatedly sought house arrest due to health concerns but faced rejection from Brazil's Supreme Court. His son, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who is preparing to run for president later this year, described his father's condition as stable but acknowledged the ongoing health challenges stemming from a stabbing incident during a 2018 campaign event, according to Al Jazeera.
