  • Sweden confirms a Russian drone was intercepted near the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle.
  • The drone was jammed 13 kilometers away from the carrier during its visit to Sweden.
  • French officials have condemned the incident as a "ridiculous provocation."
  • Swedish forces took the drone down as it was deemed unauthorized, coming from a Russian military vessel.

Swedish military officials confirmed that a drone, intercepted near the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, was of Russian origin. This incident occurred in the Öresund strait as the carrier was docked for NATO exercises, prompting condemnation from French officials. "The Swedish Armed Forces can now confirm that a Russian drone has carried out an unauthorized flight," said the military in a statement, specifying that the drone was launched from a Russian signals intelligence ship, the Zhigulevsk, which had also been present in the vicinity, according to Le Monde, LA Times, Le Monde, and Al Jazeera.

The drone was neutralized about 8 miles from the aircraft carrier without ever threatening its security, according to French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, who insisted that such actions emphasize a pattern of aggressive behavior by Russia. "The only conclusion I would draw is that it would be a ridiculous provocation," Barrot stated. The Swedish Defense Minister, Pål Jonson, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that "the incident constitutes a breach of Sweden’s access regulations," as it violated Swedish airspace during an exercise that is supported by the NATO alliance, according to Le Monde, LA Times, Le Monde, and Al Jazeera.

The Swedish military's action reflects broader tensions in the Baltic Sea as multiple countries have reported drone sightings linked to Russian activities in recent months. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson noted a troubling pattern in this behavior, stating that such incidents point to a "Russian way of acting that we recognize from other places." Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov described the Swedish allegations as "absurd," indicating Moscow's continued dismissal of accusations associated with its military operations, according to Le Monde, LA Times, Le Monde, and Al Jazeera.
