Bill Gates has publicly apologized to staff at the Gates Foundation for his ties to Jeffrey Epstein, describing the relationship as a "huge mistake" that has adversely impacted the reputation of his philanthropic organization. During a recent town hall meeting, Gates maintained that he did "nothing illicit," insisting he did not have contact with any of Epstein's abuse victims and expressing regret that his association with Epstein had overshadowed the foundation's work, according to Indiatimes and CBS News.
During the meeting, Gates also admitted to having extramarital affairs with two Russian women, clarifying that these women were not involved in Epstein’s criminal activities. A spokesperson for the Gates Foundation indicated that Gates "spoke candidly" and took responsibility for his past decisions. Gates had acknowledged in his commentary that he continued his association with Epstein for discussions regarding philanthropy, unaware of the full extent of Epstein's illicit background, as detailed by South China Morning Post and Anadolu Agency.
Gates first met Epstein in 2011, after Epstein had pled guilty in 2008 to soliciting a minor for prostitution. Gates noted that despite being aware of some restrictions on Epstein's travel due to his conviction, he did not conduct a thorough background check before their meetings continued up until 2014. "To give her credit, [Melinda] was always kind of skeptical about the Epstein thing," Gates said, recognizing her concerns raised in 2013. He expressed that knowing what he does now about Epstein's behavior marks his previous decisions as regrettable and indicative of poor judgment, according to BBC and Indiatimes.
Recent revelations from the U.S. Department of Justice documents have further spotlighted Gates's past ties to Epstein, including emails that detail Gates’s relationships and speculate on personal matters, which Gates's representatives have categorically denied. The Gates Foundation confirmed that it never collaborated with Epstein and emphasized that Gates's personal connections have caused significant reputational damage to their philanthropic efforts, as reported by CBS News and SCMP.
