Puerto Rico experienced a significant power outage affecting approximately 80% of the island, leaving around 1.3 million residents without power on New Year's Eve.
The outage was attributed to an infrastructure failure at a power plant located on the southern coast, according to the energy company Luma.
Luma has begun phased restoration efforts, anticipating full service resumption to take between 24 and 48 hours.
Governor Pedro Pierluisi expressed concerns over the situation, demanding prompt action and communication from Luma and Genera PR.
Despite the outage, Luis Muñoz MarÃn International Airport reports that flights are operational, with backup generators in use.
