Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has declared a historic turning point for Türkiye following the symbolic disarmament of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). "Today is a new day; a new page has opened in history," Erdogan stated, referring to the burning of PKK weapons by 30 militants in northern Iraq, which marks the beginning of the group's dismantlement after decades of conflict that has claimed over 40,000 lives, according to Al Jazeera, TRT Global, and Reuters.
Erdogan emphasized that this disarmament ushers in a 'Century of Türkiye', reinforcing his vision of a unified country, stating, "The doors to a great, strong Türkiye have been fully opened." He noted that the parliament will play a crucial role in establishing a legal framework for this new chapter, which he believes will lead to national healing and a terror-free Türkiye, as indicated by AA and AA.
Framing the disarmament as a unifying victory for all Turkish citizens—“Turks, Kurds, Arabs”—Erdogan stressed the importance of collective national efforts in moving forward. "We are on the verge of completely freeing our nation from the shackles of terrorism that have imposed upon it for 47 years," he reaffirmed, highlighting his commitment to a comprehensive, peace-oriented approach, according to TRT Global and AA.
