MINNEAPOLIS: Vance Boelter, a 57-year-old man, was arrested for fatally shooting Minnesota state Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, during a politically motivated attack on June 15, 2025. The assailant, disguised as a police officer and driving an SUV outfitted with emergency lights, also shot and wounded state Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, earlier that morning, according to Channel News Asia.
Authorities have charged Boelter with two counts of second-degree murder and multiple counts of attempted murder and stalking. After conducting extensive surveillance, Boelter allegedly targeted his victims, which included legislators and abortion rights advocates, painting a chilling picture of political violence in Minnesota, as noted by India Times and Los Angeles Times.
In total, Boelter visited homes of four lawmakers, but fled when confronted by police or found no one at home, according to The Hill and South China Morning Post.
Boelter’s extensive planning involved researching the politicians' homes and compiling a notebook with names of other potential targets. This level of premeditation was described as “the stuff of nightmares” by acting U.S. Attorney for Minnesota, Joseph Thompson, during a press conference, as reported by ABC News.
After the shootings, local law enforcement initiated the largest manhunt in Minnesota’s history. Boelter was eventually captured roughly 43 hours after the incident following an active search that included drones and SWAT teams, according to multiple sources including The Hill and ABC News.
During the investigation, authorities found firearms and a list of over 45 politicians in Boelter's vehicle. His prior communications indicated he was likely anticipating violent confrontations with other politicians, as outlined in affidavits reviewed by Salon and The Hill.
