Families of the victims from the Air India crash have begun to hold funerals for their loved ones, amidst the grief surrounding the loss of at least 279 people in one of the deadliest air disasters in recent history. In Ahmedabad, health officials have started handing over the first identified remains, with the process being both painstaking and emotional. At least 38 individuals were also killed on the ground when the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into buildings shortly after takeoff on Thursday, according to Channel News Asia and Africa News.

The identification process has been arduous, with families providing DNA samples. As of Sunday, officials confirmed the DNA of 86 victims had been matched, and some families have already received bodies in coffins, causing emotional farewells at local crematoriums, reports India Times and South China Morning Post.

Among the identified victims was Megha Mehta, whose funeral saw close family and friends mourning collectively. Many faced the heartbreaking reality of never being able to see their loved ones' faces one last time due to the condition of the remains. Emotional scenes unfolded at the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad, where Rajneesh Patel, a doctor, described the meticulous and deliberate DNA matching process that has been initiated to help bring closure to grieving families, according to Channel News Asia and Africa News.

As families attempt to cope with their losses, attention is now shifting towards understanding the cause of this tragic accident. Authorities have recovered the plane's black boxes, which are expected to provide critical data regarding the flight's final moments. Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu stated that the examination of these devices should yield meaningful insights into the accident, as investigators remain committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring future aviation safety, as reported by South China Morning Post and India Times.
