Gaza Food Stocks Depleted Amid Ongoing Israeli Blockade, Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

  • The World Food Programme (WFP) has run out of food stocks in Gaza, impacting hundreds of thousands.
  • Approximately 80% of Gaza's population relies on charity kitchens for sustenance, now facing imminent depletion.
  • The World Health Organization warns of critical medical supply shortages amid the blockade.
  • Conditions worsen with over 51,000 reported deaths in Gaza since the conflict escalated in October 2023.
  • Humanitarian organizations label the blockade a 'starvation tactic' and call for immediate aid access.

The United Nations' World Food Programme (WFP) confirmed that it has fully exhausted its food reserves in Gaza, disrupting essential food supplies for hundreds of thousands of residents amid an ongoing blockade. This situation marks a worsening humanitarian crisis as WFP stated it delivered its last food supplies to charity kitchens, which are now expected to run out within days, according to Indian Times and South China Morning Post.

Over 80% of Gaza’s population of over 2 million people now relies primarily on these kitchens for food, since other sources of support have ceased due to severe restrictions imposed by Israel on March 2. The rise in hunger has been termed an "awful and grim moment" by WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus, echoing the urgent humanitarian needs and calling for aid access, according to Anadolu Agency and Africa News.

The UN’s humanitarian office has described the circumstances in Gaza as “probably the worst it has ever been,” and several aid organizations contend that the blockade effectively constitutes a form of politically motivated starvation. Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UN Palestinian refugee agency, denounced the blockade, stressing that “the entry of food and other basics” continues to be obstructed, impacting lives drastically in Gaza, as noted by Jakarta Post and Anadolu Agency.

Since the resurgence of conflict in October 2023, the humanitarian situation has escalated, with reports stating that over 51,000 Palestinians have lost their lives, most of whom are women and children. Rights groups are decrying the blockade as tantamount to a war crime, further complicating efforts for a ceasefire and humanitarian intervention. The entire humanitarian community is reiterating that “the siege must stop” to alleviate the suffering, according to TRT Global and Dawn.
