Two individuals were arrested after allegedly shoplifting more than $1,200 worth of meat from a Safeway in Cupertino on December 28, 2024. The incident occurred just before 11 a.m. when the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office received a theft report from the store located on Homestead Road. According to Brooks Jarosz, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office, the store manager stated that an employee witnessed two men loading large amounts of meat into bags and attempting to exit the store.
The manager followed the suspects outside, observing them enter a getaway vehicle, described as a black Toyota Prius. An alert Safeway employee noted the license plate, which aided law enforcement in tracking down the vehicle (SFGATE). Deputies were able to locate the vehicle at a residence, where they discovered the stolen New Year’s meats, which included prime rib eye and other expensive cuts.
Upon investigation, authorities found not just the meat, but also various cooking ingredients such as mayonnaise, salt, olive oil, and avocados among the stolen items, as detailed in the sheriff’s office Facebook post. The suspects, a 39-year-old man and a 34-year-old man, both hailing from San Jose, have been booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail. They now face charges of grand theft and conspiracy.
