An avalanche in a backcountry area of western Wyoming resulted in the tragic death of one skier and injuries to another after the group triggered a large snowslide while ascending a steep slope. The incident occurred on Saturday, about 20 miles east of Grand Teton National Park (Independent).

The group, consisting of four individuals, was climbing at an elevation of 10,400 feet when a massive slab of snow approximately five feet thick broke loose. This led to one skier being fully buried and another partially buried, as detailed by Teton County Search and Rescue and the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center (Guardian).

Authorities received the accident alert shortly before noon. Rescuers faced challenges reaching the site due to severe weather; a helicopter was unable to reach the location, necessitating a four-hour ski trek by the rescue team.

Sadly, the fatality has been identified as Kenneth Goff, aged 36, a seasoned wilderness nurse and instructor at the National Outdoor Leadership School. His expertise in climbing and mountaineering was well-regarded, and his loss has left a deep impact on the community. NOLS said, “Kenny was calm and caring, chronically positive, a climbing partner to many, and a friend to all” (Guardian).

This incident marks the fifth avalanche-related death in the U.S. this winter, amidst a backdrop of increasing snowfall in the region, as indicated by National Weather Service forecaster Jason Straub.
