Rudy Giuliani, former New York City mayor and close ally of Donald Trump, has been found in contempt of court for not complying with a $148 million defamation judgment awarded to two Georgia election workers, Ruby Freeman and Wandrea “Shaye” Moss. A court ruling determined that Giuliani "willfully violated a clear and unambiguous order" regarding asset disclosures necessary to settle the judgment against him
.The court's decision came after US District Judge Lewis J. Liman noted during a hearing that Giuliani had failed to submit required documentation by a designated deadline. The judge pointed out that Giuliani had not only missed the **December 20 deadline** but also failed to provide complete information regarding his assets, including a condominium in Palm Beach, Florida, that Giuliani claims as his primary residence (source: Al Jazeera).
Freeman and Moss initiated their defamation lawsuit against Giuliani in 2021, claiming that his false statements had caused extensive damage to their reputations and led to threats against their safety. Throughout this case, Giuliani had asserted that he complied with the court's demands. However, Judge Liman was not convinced, labeling the former mayor’s documentation as "cherry picked" and insufficient for the required compliance (source: NPR).
During the proceedings, Judge Liman emphasized that Giuliani's suspicion towards the motivations of the election workers' legal representatives could not excuse his noncompliance with the court's orders. This includes his failure to provide comprehensive details about other properties and the whereabouts of various valuable assets, including sports memorabilia and cash from nonexempt accounts (source: BBC).
As part of the damages, a jury initially ordered Giuliani to pay $73 million in compensation and an additional $75 million as punitive damages for his defamatory remarks suggesting that the election workers engaged in ballot tampering during the contentious 2020 presidential election
.The court has scheduled a trial for January 16, which will further address whether Giuliani must vacate his Florida home and relinquish other prized possessions, including his World Series rings (source: Al Jazeera).
