APIA, Samoa – Mahonri Schwalger has officially resigned from his position as the head coach of the Samoa men’s rugby team amid serious criminal charges against him. This announcement was confirmed by the chairman of the Samoa Rugby Union, Tuilaepa Dr. Sailele Malielegaoi, indicating that the board has accepted Schwalger's resignation. His suspension occurred in September after he faced charges that include unlawful sexual connection, attempted sexual violation, and indecent assault. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 28th (source: AP News).
Previously, under Schwalger's leadership, the 2024 Manu Samoa achieved notable successes, including a historic victory over Italy, marking Samoa's first win against a tier one nation in a decade. "Schwalger has given everything to our country through the Manu Samoa," stated Tuilaepa, highlighting his contributions to the team and the rugby community (source: Reuters).
Schwalger, who previously played as a hooker for Samoa, had taken on the coaching role in April following the resignation of Seilala Mapusua, who led the team through the 2023 Rugby World Cup. The Samoa Rugby Union will now initiate the search for a new head coach, assuring fans of their commitment to the team's growth in international rugby.
